An inferno, on Sunday 2nd August, 2015 gutted the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) office, in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
The fire destroyed documents, furniture and other valuables in the office leaving only the wall of the building and remains of materials made of steel.
Residents of Mgboko community where the INEC office is located within the confine of the local government secretariat said the Inferno was politically motivated as suspected political thugs armed with knives, cutlasses and guns stormed the local government headquarters before setting the electoral office on fire.
Another witness, Mr. Chinyere Akwarandu, an official of the local government council, said a corps member alerted him of the fire at 11 a.m. in his house
Akwarandu said the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, serving with the INEC, reported that their building was on fire, following which he raced to the scene.
He said that on arrival at the scene effort was made to put out the fire, but the force of the inferno later prompted them to attempt to prevent it from extending to other buildings in the council’s secretariat. This action comes ahead of the August 10th date fixed for the commencement of the state election tribunal.
Results from the local government is among many issues that is strongly being contested to further buttress how they manufactured the 82, 240 votes in favor of Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, the present governor of the state who hails from Obingwa.
By the way, Obingwa local government had the highest number of accredited voters during presidential and gubernatorial elections (appox 50,000) across the federation.
Obingwa have always been a force in the political structure of Abia state after producing two former deputy governors, presently producing an incumbent senator Enyinmma Abaribe, representing Abia south senatorial district and also Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu current governor of the state.
