The Royal family of England gathered Saturday to celebrate the Queen’s 89th birthday with the Trooping the Colour parade. Though Queen Elizabeth’s actual birthday is April 21, the parade is held in June every year in hopes of getting better weather. More than 1000 soldiers and 200 horses from the Household Division march in the parade including 200 musicians from six different bands playing as one. Prince Charles, who is Colonel of the Welsh Guards, the Princess Anne, Colonel of the Blues and Royals, and the Duke of Cambridge, Colonel of the Irish Guards also rode on horseback during the parade. Trooping The Colour is a military custom which originated when regiments would troop (carry) the flag daily to ensure their men could recognize the flag in battle.
Kate Middleton, dressed in a periwinkle silk Catherine Walker coatdress and an ivory Lock & Co. hat, made her first public appearance since giving birth to Princess Charlotte. After the parade, the family gathered on the balcony of Buckingham Palace where Prince George made his Buckingham Palace balcony debut in the same romper Prince William wore to Trooping the Colour in 1984.
