The recent news about how each of 360 House of Representatives members are to receive N17.5million as a wardrobe allowance and each of 109 senators to receive N21.5million surprised not only the ordinary Nigerians, but also the political class.
A senator who represents Kogi West Senatorial district, Dino melaye, strongly criticized the proposed wardrobe allowance, adding that the country’s lawmakers must be ready to accept a pay cut due to the economic situation in Nigeria.

The senator gave his opinion on June 16, Tuesday, while speaking during a programme on Africa Independent Television.
“I stand solidly on what I earlier said about pay cut. There must be a pay cut to Senators and House of Representative members.
“You can’t be talking about change and this kind of money in this country now when people are hungry. We must be sacrificious. We must show Nigerians that we must sacrifice by allowing a pay cut,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ben Murray-Bruce, senator-elect representing Bayelsa East, has also added his voice to the discussion. In series of tweets, posted on June 16, the senator noted that he shares responsibility of decisions taken by the 8th Senate.

He twitted stating is view about the issues arising through his handle @benmurraybruce
"My attention had been drawn to news reports about intended payments to be made to Federal Legislators.
To the best of my knowledge, these payments were not discussed at plenary or in private.
My investigations establish that payments to be made are those independently decided upon by the RMAFC
There is such a thing as collective responsibility. As a senator, I share responsibility of decisions taken by the 8th Senate.
I only control my actions. The best I can do is influence the actions of my colleagues in the Senate. Nations change over time not overnight.
This fight can only be effective if I build coalitions with my colleagues. This fight will be dead on arrival if I alienate them.
Let me assure my constituents and the rest of Nigeria that I remain committed to fighting for their interests.
I urge patience and understanding from all Nigerians even as I assure you that I, Ben Murray Bruce, will continue to be on your side" he said.
